Mini sites and authority sites represent two alternative online marketing models, and not everyone understands the real differences. Inexperienced internet marketers often don’t know the difference or have trouble choosing between these alternatives. Among the many considerations that are involved, you can’t ignore Google’s algorithms when it comes to ranking sites.
The bottom line, though, is it all depends on a person’s overall goal, strategy, and individual preferences. What follows is a comparison of mini sites and authority sites, which can help anybody who’s trying to choose between the two. For example, if you’re targeting a niche like order flowers then creating mini sites about that topic will help you dominate it.
Sometimes people only want to get involved with one particular aspect of a market. There is no shame in this at all. Sometimes you’re only interested in that very thin slice of the market known as a micro-niche. It is in these segments of marketers that mini sites dominate and thrive. Mini sites allow you to target a small number of keyword phrases and rank well in the search engines for them. That is, of course, assuming that competition for these keywords isn’t overcrowded. Of course, it’s possible to focus on a micro-niche within the confines of an authority site. Mini sites are probably the way to go for you if this doesn’t appeal to you at all.
Yes, you can land a minisite on page one up at the top, but you will have to work harder to do it, anymore. People like using minisites because everything about them is fast – from building to seeing profits if you know what you are doing. Think of an authority site as an investment. If you do everything yourself with an authority site, then you will spend a great deal of time on it. Not everyone is attracted to buying financial stocks and holding them until they retire. When it comes to SEO and high rankings, then the authority site is much like a dinosaur that moves very slowly. But when that does happen, then your potential for profit becomes much greater than any single minisite.
One benefit of authority sites that you do not see often concerns ranking for other keyword phrases. It’s possible to get your site ranking very well for synonyms of your chosen keywords and phrases as well. You have the possibility of exploiting those alternative keywords to improve your rankings even further. Analyze the stats for those synonyms, but also try to determine whether you can expand on them to create other keyword phrases to help your rankings. Many established websites will find this happening to their own rankings over time. Once again, these kinds of results do take time, so be patient.
The question of which is best, an authority site or a mini site, is perhaps not really the most important question to ask. It is almost like comparing apples to oranges because the two site models are so different and unique. The common elements these type of sites share are overshadowed by their different scales and purposes.
So then the question becomes one of what do you prefer to do? You also have to consider your goals when it comes to your website. With a mini site, you can market an extremely targeted niche, whereas an authority site can help you brand yourself in the long run.
