Do you recall the good old days of “traditional” advertising? An ad in the newspaper. A radio commercial or a series of radio commercials in a radio advertising campaign. An advertisement in a newspaper or magazine.

And then came the Internet.

These days businesses are pinching their pennies when it comes to advertising their products and services. That’s because print and television ads are expensive. But Internet marketing enables businesses to bring their products or services directly to people who are looking for them.

Engaging in pay-per-click (PPC) advertising has its own benefits and drawbacks. But just what is PPC advertising?

PPC advertising is a technique used in search engine marketing that requires one to pay a fee every time someone clicks an ad on your website.

Usually this placement is done through a bidding process. If you are a top bidder for your keywords/phrases, you are sure to be on the number one spot on all search engines. To get the maximum number of clicks on your PPC ads, you will need to constantly test new advertising copy.

The benefits of PPC advertising are:

1. You can advertise online without being a technical wizard.

2. Immediate results are seen after a few days.

3. You don’t need to optimize your website in order to succeed with PPC.

4. You don’t need to have high “organic” search engine rankings to succeed.

5. You can bid for any keyword you like.

Cons of PPC advertising include:

1. There is no shelf life to your ads; the day you stop advertising is the day no one else sees them.

2. You pay for each click, even if it doesn’t result in a sale. At times, visitors are just competitors or people playing pranks on search engines. That’s an annoying waste of your advertising cost.

3. Your ads disappear the day you stop paying the search engine(s).

4. Needs lots of attention and continual fine-tuning.

5. Pay-per-click pricing can be costly for long periods of time.
