The Joomla CMS has often been popular however it had been scorned by some developers as it lacked a couple of significant features. This has been resolved with the release of Joomla version 1.6 in early 2011. 2 major features were introduced; nested categories and new access controls.
Nested Categories
Joomla 1.0 and Joomla 1.5 had a straightforward storage system. Content items were called articles. Articles needed to be stored in categories and categories were saved in sections. Some found this two-tier system confusing and restraining. Joomla 1.6 has dropped sections and now just has categories. Site owners can create any category they like. For example, they can choose to have a single category or a few categories or nested categories. The second option allows categories to be stored in categories in the same way as you would find in an ecommerce shop. There is also an option to hop categories altogether and simply store an article as “Uncategorized”.

Although Joomla has always had a basic system for protecting content, version 1.6 introduced a new and terribly detailed access control system. This works in a similar way to protecting content on a computer. Site owners create groups and assign certain authorizations to those groups. Site users can then be assigned to a few groups. One of the easiest methods to explain this is to think about a college. Inside a school are a large amount of scholars. “All students” is one group. Students who play musical instruments are in the “music” group. Students who study chemistry are allotted to the “chemistry” group. There will be some crossovers between groups. For example, it’s possible that one student might be in both the music and chemistry group.
Each group is permitted to do particular things. All students are able to attend the highschool. Only music students are authorized in the music room. And only chemistry scholars are able to use chemicals.
Joomla authorizations can be made in an analogous fashion and with Joomla 1.6 and following, they have complete pliability. For example, a group called “Public” can be created and articles with a standing set as public can be viewed by anyone visiting the site. There is also a group called “members” and any articles that have been assigned to this group can only be viewed by users which have been marked as members. Those users need to login to the site to view those articles. Further permissions can be applied to a group called “editors” who can view constrained content and change the content.

With the arrival of Joomla 1.6, the Joomla Team has moved to releasing updates every 6 months. Joomla 1.7 is rumored for release on July 19th 2011.
