For those of you who know a lot about marketing online, you are probably familiar with the saying “lists will get you cash”. Leading online marketers are always teaching their students that creating focused email lists of potential members is essential. And the fact is, yes this is the holy grail of online marketing and it is very true. Having an extensive and dedicated list is the only tried and true method of being able to develop an enduring business that will eventually be able to generate profits for you automatically. There are many aspects of the email list you need to know, which make creating one somewhat of a difficult process for some new online entrepreneurs. It’s for this reason that many businesses begin the process, yet abandon their efforts after making a few errors. Well, I’m here to tell you that you should NOT give up! Just learn from everything, including you mistakes, and the process will get easier. In this article we will be discussing some common mistakes that you should avoid when building your own list. Whether or not you intend to target a specific niche market such as blog marketing tips or any other niche, it’s essential that you remember the following tips.

You need to always “consider the source” when collecting e-mail addresses from list services or colleagues, because some lists can be very valuable and others could be a waste of time. There will be people on your list who will totally love your content and there will be others who would want to get out. There’s really not anything bad about this as long as you know it upfront. It’s just a process to help you target the ones that are interested. Which brings us to another big mistake many marketers have made and that’s not to give a link within their mailings for recipients to opt out. If you make unsubscribing a painful and nearly impossible process for your subscribers, this does nothing good for your business efforts. In fact, it’s counterproductive. If you don’t you could be accused of sending spam mailings. So it’s important to have your opt-out link with a message right at the bottom of every email that you send out. The last thing you want to do is bug people. If you annoy and irritate subscribers, all you end up with is people who will undoubtedly give you bad worth of mouth. In any business, word of mouth is worth its weight in gold. You want folks to either have nice things to say about you, or nothing to say about you. Instead, you should be focusing on getting your content out to those who WANT your product, who will then show a level of admiration for the way you conduct your business. You want people who like and appreciate what you send them. The main purpose of what you are doing is to make your list as profitable as possible, so it should only contain targeted clients who have an interest in your offerings. Whether you intend to target a niche like building an email list or any other specialized niche, it’s crucial that you remember the following tips.

Marketers frequently make another simple error: emailing promotional material to users that have not subscribed to receive it. Not only do you take the risk of being labeled and reported as a spammer, there is simply no excuse in doing so.

Make sure you are clear in your email when it comes to who you are and your contact info. If you’re sending emails anonymously people aren’t going to trust them and also assume that they are spam. You need your business address, phone number, your business email and any other information that your subscribers and customers are going to need. In addition to this, take the necessary steps to ensure that the e-mail you’re sending doesn’t read as if it were spam. For your subject line, make sure to avoid the use of words that may flag your email as spam or other unwanted correspondence.

In conclusion, building a list takes a lot of effort and time, but in the end it’s all worth it. There are numerous people who have been unsuccessful due to their setting aside the basics and opting for the path of least resistance. And don’t let lack of response or complaints from leads deter you. However, it will all be worth it once you see that you are generating money at will.
